Living in Memory: Grieving the Loss of a Beloved PetThe holidays are a time of year when many of us are more cheerful than usual, where we greet strangers on the sidewalk with an exuberant “Happy Holidays” and a time when we treasure even more than usual our family and friends. Yet, if during the holiday dinner you find yourself glancing at an empty pet bed in the corner, the holidays can be a painful experience as well.
Losing a pet is like losing any other companion. You have to grieve. From the moments when you pretend it’s not true, and hope to see them bounding up the stairs, to when you finally admit that the dog bed needs to be put away or given away, it’s hard to lose a friend, whether they’re on four legs or two. The holidays magnify this pain, as they focus on togetherness and family, and part of your family is gone.
